One sweet dream
Pick up the bags and get in the limousine
Soon we’ll be away from here
Step on the gas and wipe that tear away
One sweet dream came true today
(Be bop ba deetin’ do – do wha ah ah ah ah ah)
Okay, so that last scat part is my ragged interpretation of whatever it is that Paul McCartney belts out at the end of that phrase. I listened to it numerous times, but it defies syllabication. Maybe someone else can do better? Help me out, here!
From “You Never Give Me Your Money” on The Beatles’ Abbey Road album, these lyrics always seemed to capture just what it feels like to be “leaving”. Lots of bittersweet emotions:
Sorrow
Resolve
Promise
Just a few lines, yet something that all of us have felt so many times. Face it – leaving sucks! If you are human, you’ve had to leave somewhere, sometime. Whether your doing it on a jet plane, or a train – doing it forever, or for just a little while – it hurts. Even if you are heading off on an adventure and pursuing a dream. Home is a hard place to leave behind. And the closer we got to leaving, the better our good old log home looked – especially after twelve years.
And then, after months of planning, we realized that you can never get everything done. So, ultimately, we threw the last couple of items in the Alumousine and stepped on the gas…
…all the way to Auburn, CA (just about 20 miles away from home).
Sandy, in her infinite wisdom, decided we should spend a few days close to home so that we could go home each day to get stuff we forgot. Thank God! I had absolutely no desire to spend even a day in Auburn, but over a three day period, we ended up going home every day. We grabbed at least a few dozen “indispensable” items, got another ten or twenty things done, and bought a bike rack which we didn’t end up using – but that’s another story.
Unfortunately, it also prolonged the leaving. I highly recommend making a clean break. Take your leave with surgical precision. Cut deeply and swiftly. Rip the bandaid off as quickly as you can.
And yesterday, I think we finally did that. Goodbye to Auburn! We hopped in the truck and headed toward Three Rivers, CA and Sequoia National Park. Now “officially officially” on the road.
Two people and a dog heading down the highway.
Be bop ba deetin’ do – do wha ah ah ah ah ah!
Great song –– “oh that magic feeling, no where to go . . . ” = itchon!
I ❤️ & miss talking about lyrics with you –– does that scat start with “yes it did now . . . wha ha ha ha ha”? Hadn’t realized “You Never Give Me Your Money” was a leaving song but you’re right, that must be why it’s so brilliant. p.s. startling & amazing bear-in-river shot!
Lynn- You might be right. It certainly sounds like it, and it makes sense. Except for the “wah ha ha ha” part.
I had a thoroughbred ex-race horse named Kaweahray, his mom was Kaweah. Just thought I’d mention that. Miss you guys, miss knowing you were just down the road.
Miss you Jeanne, and everyone on Big Spring Dr! Thanks for following our adventures. We have not had the best internet here in Death Valley. Hoping it will be better in Zion, which is where we are headed next.
